ON Saturday 12th November, Broughton Wings Sports & Social Club's snooker section hosted its first-ever snooker exhibition, starring local professional Ricky Walden.
The event was a sell-out to a capacity crowd of 70 spectators who came to watch the 17th best snooker player in the world in action. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening which saw individuals from the Broughton Wings snooker team take on the three-times major ranking event winner.
Club veteran, Patrick Haycock was Ricky's first opponent of the night, but sadly for Patrick he failed to score a single point. Ex-professionals Neal Jones and Alex Ferguson failed in their attempt to beat the most successful snooker player ever to come out of Chester, as did Welsh international Jack Bradford, club stalwart Darroch Mackie and 15-year-old Tai Jones.
However, it was our very own professional Gareth Allen ranked 111 in the world that upset Ricky's plans of a clean sweep by beating Ricky in a very dramatic frame. Three raffle winners also had the once in a lifetime opportunity to put their skills to the test against Ricky. Unfortunately for the contenders, this resulted in further glory with a trio of wins for the man who has earned more than £1 million in his career as a professional.
I would also like to mention and thank our compere for the evening, Paul Ellis, who made the event run smoothly and put the cherry on top of a fantastic night with his comical introductions of players and "funny" jokes in between frames.
"I really enjoyed my exhibition night at Broughton Wings and I'm sure everybody who attended did too!" says Ricky Walden.
"The facilities for playing snooker here are by far the best I have seen in any social club and is somewhat of a rarity in this day and age. I'm looking forward to playing here again in the future."
